Joanne O. Vanier passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.

She was born in Portland on October 3, 1952, the daughter of Doris J. McCormick and Fred Higgins. Joanne was known for her kindness, quiet strength, and the love she gave so freely to her family and friends. She found joy in being with those she loved most and created lasting memories that will be cherished forever.

Joanne is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Stephen B. Vanier, her children, Jon B. Vanier, Stephanie O. Vanier, and Ryan J. Vanier and his wife Danielle, and her beloved grandchildren, Kobe V. Velez, Adeline N. Vanier, and Oscar J. Vanier.

She is also survived by her brother, James Higgins and his wife Cathy; her sister, Julie Higgins Van Sickle and her husband Kirk; her niece, Hillary Mordecai; and extended family member Thomas J. Velez.

A celebration of life will be held on January 29, 2026 from 4:00 -6:00 PM  at A. T. Hutchins, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland, ME 04102.

Joanne will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
