Obituary

Joan L (Coughlin) Strout of Portland passed away after a brief illness on December 7, 2024 at Maine Medical Center. Her husband, Leon E. Strout, was by her side as he had been for over 71 years. Married in 1953, Lee and Joan were inseparable and shared many adventures together. They loved entertaining at their home in Falmouth: by the pool in the summer and by the fireplace in the cooler months. They still enjoyed going on 'dates' and were especially fond of dining out and picnics on the East End. Joan was born in Portland, Maine on Valentine's Day in 1934 along with her identical twin sister. Known as the Valentine's Day twins, they were frequently photographed and interviewed by local media. While attending Portland High School she was a majorette and actively involved in Cadets, a military organization. Joan loved life and liked everyone she met. She enjoyed dancing, singing, gardening, cooking, decorating, and keeping up with the latest fashion trends. Later in life she achieved her goal of obtaining a nail technician's license, giving her the chance to share her talent for making fingers and toes look beautiful. Most of all she had a deep love of family. She made every holiday magical with special meals and beautiful decorations. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, John Coughlin and Barbara Macomber, brother, Jack Coughlin, and beloved twin sister, Jean. She is survived by her husband, Lee; daughters Lori Wilson (Linwood) of York, Sue Strout (John Doyon) of Kennebunkport; grandchildren Matt Welter (Julia) of Scarborough, Meredith Brown (Sam) of Kennebunk, Gregory Wilson (Amanda) of Kennebunk; and four great grandsons: Jacob, Evan, Julian, and Owen. Joan was thrilled to learn that a fifth great grandson would be joining the family next year. Joan will be deeply missed as a wife, mother, Nani, and GG. Her family is grateful for the many years they had together. A private celebration of life will be held in the spring.
