Jennie Arlene VanScyoc June 22, 1926 August 19, 2012 Portland - Jennie Arlene VanScyoc, 86, passed away peacefully, on August 19, 2012, in the loving arms of her daughter Nancy and Son-In-Law Ken. Jennie was born on June 22, 1926 in Portland, the daughter of Wilfred and Mildred Noel. In June 1945 she married the love of her life, Larry VanScyoc. Together they raised five children and a grandson. Sadly, together they lost and buried three of their children and the grandson they raised. Jennie worked for 20 years as a traffic guide for the Portland Police Dept. Always arriving early and staying late to be sure all the kids were safely across busy Brighton Ave. When realizing retirement wasn't for her, she went to work at Hannaford's in Scarborough where she stayed for 22 years until her retirement at age 84. Her daughter Nancy said her mom was a little spitfire of a lady, weighing 100lbs. and walking 2 miles every day no matter what the weather was. Her greatest achievement in life were her children and grandchildren. Being with them was her greatest joy. The cookouts and boat rides at her daughters Nancy's camp, all the holidays and the many shopping sprees will never be the same without her. Jennie was a Christian lady all her life, being a member of the Second Parish Presbyterian Church. Jennie was predeceased by her husband, Larry, her children, Gary, Larry, and Gloria, and a grandson, Gary II. She is survived by her daughters Nancy Lee Adams and her husband Ken of Portland, Diana Queen and her husband John of Spartanburg, SC, eight grandchildren, Ken III, Michael, Kevin, Brian, David, Samantha, Bobbi Jo, and ""Lil"" Smit, and twelve great grandchildren. Jennie's daughters would like to thank Ann Marie and her wonderful staff at the Barron Center for their devoted care and great compassion they showed to our mother during her stay. Toni and the staff in the Libby Town Unit are to us, Angels from above and we thank them with all our hearts. Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Thursday, August 23, 2012 from 1 - 3pm, with a Funeral Service to follow at 3pm at A.T. Hutchins, LLC Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. Burial will be private by the family at Highland Memorial Gardens in South Portland.
