Obituary

Jeannette L. Hanson July 7, 1930 January 9, 2015 Portland - Jeannette L. Hanson 84, of the Iris Park Apartments, Portland, ME passed away January 2015 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice Home from complications associated with Alzheimer's. She was born July 7, 1930 in Lewiston, ME to Walter and Mildred Randall Davis. After moving to the greater Portland area in her teens, she attended Deering High School where she met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Hanson, whom she has been married to for 68 years. Jeannette was an amazing woman who overcame many obstacles, including becoming legally blind over 10 years ago. Obstacles did not stop her from finding time to help others. An avid knitter, she made and donated hundreds of scarves to the homeless and baby blankets to the Ronald MacDonald House of Portland. After learning she had Alzheimer's, one of Jeannette's goals was to knit a blanket for every member of her family. With the help of a family friend, Joanne Pruneau, she succeeded to make 26 blankets. Family always came first to Jeannette. She loved family dinner every Sunday and holiday gatherings when she was able to see all of her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and family pets. Jeannette loved all dogs and cats. Jeannette took great pride in the fact that she was a direct descendant of the Mayflower. She was also 'proud to have been president of the Maine Lupus Association for many years and a member of a ladies' church group that volunteered at local nursing homes. Jeannette enjoyed traveling with her husband, having visited Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, and Europe. For many years they spent their winters in Florida and summers in Maine. A homemaker and mother first, Jeanette also worked as a stitcher for Herman Shoe in Scarborough, ME, and as stamper/imprinter at Winchester Electronic in Oakville, CT. In her 50's she went to SMCC and earned her CNA so she could work at Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough, ME, where she continued to volunteer after retirement for many years. Jeannette is predeceased by her parents and three siblings: Robert, William and Ruth. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Robert, a daughter Suzanne Hart and her husband Tony, a son Robert Hanson and his wife Cecilia, and a daughter Lisa Ranger, 7 grandchildren, Jennifer Marchand, Matthew Ranger, Michael Bolduc, Cherilyn Ranger, Randall Bolduc, Rachael Furbush, and Ashley Hart and their spouses and 8 great grandchildren.
