Janice F. Wood-Thomas July 12, 1924 April 11, 2012 Janice F. Wood-Thomas, 87, a life-long resident of Rhode Island, died April 11, 2012 at Bay Square, Yarmouth, Maine, of complications from Alzheimer's disease. The oldest of four children, Janice was born July 12, 1924 in Cumberland, Rhode Island to William E. and Hildred I. Wood. Janice graduated from Pawtucket East High School, Pawtucket, RI, in 1942 and from Pembroke College, Brown University, Providence, RI, in 1946. She received her Masters in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island in 1970. Janice worked as the librarian at Scituate (RI) Junior-Senior High School from 1970 until her retirement in 1994. She was a strong-willed woman who cared deeply about education and equal rights. She was active in Pflag and was on the Board of Directors of both AIDS Project RI and AIDS Quilt RI. She was also on the Board of Directors of Diamond Hill Cemetery Association, and was active on the Pawtucket East High School Reunion Committee, the Brown University Reunion Committee for her classes. Janice also participated in BCLIR classes (Building a Community of Learning in Retirement) at Brown University. Janice was married to the late Robert J. Thomas, Jr. until their divorce in 1973. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother William Wood, her sister Elaine Price, and her beloved son Scott Thomas. Janice is survived by her sister Meredith Allison of Annapolis, MD and Narragansett, RI. She leaves four daughters: Pamela Thomas Goucher, and her husband Christopher of Freeport, Maine; Barbara Thomas Goudas and her husband Nicholas, of Webster, Mass.; Marilyn Thomas and her partner Barbara Cough, of Portland, Maine and Carolyn Thomas, and her partner Jennifer Curran of Falmouth, Maine. Her life was enlivened by her seven grandchildren, Eben and Nathan Goucher, Alexander and Christina Goudas, Catie and Kimberly Cough, and Meghan Curran. Janice also leaves Douglas Montgomery of San Francisco, CA, a dear friend who cared for her son Scott in sickness and in health. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the many people who cared for Janice during her illness including the staff of the Harbor Program at Bay Square, Yarmouth, and Beacon Hospice. Thank you all for your dedication and gentle care. A memorial service will be held in Rhode Island at a later date.
