James Augustine Sullivan February 29, 1928 December 21,2015 James Augustine Sullivan James A. ""Jimmy"" Sullivan passed away peacefully at the Gosnell House on Monday, December 21, 2015 surrounded by loved ones. Jim was born in Portland on February 29, 1928 to John T. and Helen C. Sullivan. He attended St. Dominic's Grammar School and was a graduate of the Cheverus High School Class of 1946. Jim attended the College of the Holy Cross for one year before joining the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served his country in the Korean Conflict. He married Jean Hayden on February 22, 1955 and together they raised six children. Jim was employed at the New England Telephone Company for thirty years as an equipment installer. Upon his retirement, Jim and Jean lived on Peaks Island. He attended daily mass at the Monastery and became the unofficial handy man for the monks who resided there. It was common to see Jim mowing lawns or painting for any neighbors in need of his services. He delighted in his morning walks around the perimeter of the island with his good friends Paul Conley and Dave Parker. Jim was a fan of Notre Dame Football and the New England Patriots. He especially enjoyed dining at his two favorite restaurants Bruno's and DiMillo's. Family was the most important thing to Jim and his happiest moments were those spent together at his sons' camps on Crystal Lake. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Dorothy Barrett, brothers John and Philip Sullivan and a favorite nephew, John Berry. Surviving is Jim's wife of 61 years, Jean Hayden Sullivan, his sister Mary Berry, his children: Susan Sullivan, James Sullivan and Helen Harder all of Portland, Joseph Sullivan of Naples, FL, John Sullivan of New Gloucester and Daniel and Deborah Sullivan of North Yarmouth. Grandchildren Thomas and Katie Minervino, Jodi and Lee MacVane, Margaret Minervino, John Sullivan Harder, Ryan and Courtney Sullivan, great grandchildren Samuel and James Augustine Minervino , Fiona and Julia MacVane and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank The Park Danforth for providing Jim with a happy home in his later years, especially the entire Clark's Terrace nursing staff for their devoted care. Jim made many good friends during his residence there. A very special thank you to the faithful visitors to Jim at The Cedars during his illness: John Joyce, Bill Downes, Peter O'Donnell, Fred Gagnon and Mitzi Duff. And finally, heartfelt appreciation is extended to Rev. George Collins, S.J. for preparing Jim's soul for his eternal rest. Friends and family are invited to visiting hours on Sunday, December 27, 2015 from 1 to 5 pm at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015 at 11 am at St. Pius Catholic Church, 31 Vera St, Portland. Interment with full military honors will follow the mass at Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland.
