James E. McElroy died on July 24, 2026. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island on July 29, 1950. He was predeceased by his brother Terry McElroy. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Evelyn Paolilli McElroy, his sisters Christine and Marianne and brother Gene. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and in-laws, all of whom are feeling the loss.
Jimmie graduated from Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine and Fordham University in New York City. He worked for the Portland News Company for 30 years where he met his wife. He was also a loyal, loving caregiver to his parents in the last years of their lives.
He was an avid reader, an incredibly astute sports fan who could quote dates, players and plays of many sports, and a great lover of his guitar and keyboard that he played daily. He loved all kinds of music and had an almost encyclopedic knowledge that he shared with everyone.
He will be deeply missed by all of us, including his cat Bailey who is inconsolable.
Arrangements will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Checks can be mailed to: AFSP, Attn: OOTD Walks, 199 Water Street, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10038. Please note "James McElroy in the memo line."
