Obituary

James M. Gormley September 14, 1935 December 21, 2013 James (Jimmy) M. Gormley, 78, passed away on December 21, 2013, following a valiant battle with cancer. He was born to Manus and Mary Gormley on September 14, 1935. He was raised and attended school in Portland, Maine. He enlisted in the United States Navy and upon his return to Portland, he continued his love affair with the sea as a fisherman and a lobsterman. Jimmy later worked at the 24 Hour Club, and was a friend of Bill W. In this position, Jim was able to use his best asset, his gift of gab, to tell his story and listen to others gaining strength, inspiration, and creating friendships that lasted a lifetime. Jim also worked at the State House in Augusta, beginning in the mailroom and retiring as a Sargent Of Arms. Once retired, he moved to Arizona where he rekindled the passion for mining that he shared with his son, Scott. He expanded on this by learning to make jewelry, creating many beautiful pieces he shared with his family and friends. He loved the time he spent in Arizona but the sea called him home, leaving behind many cherished friends. James was predeceased by his son, John Gormley; his parents, Manus and Mary Gormley; his Aunt Jean; his sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Gormley, Eleanor Phillips, Bette Maxfield, and Rosealine Landeck. He is survived by his son, Scott and his companion, Josephine; his two grandchildren, John and Sarah Gormley; a great grandson; his sisters, Madeline Anania and her husband Raymond, Rita Doten and her husband Hal, Charlene Ricci and her husband Jim; his brother in law, Charlie Phillips and his companion Mary Ann Proulx, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express appreciation to the compassionate staff of St. Josephs Rehabilitation and Residence. A memorial service will take place in the Spring.
