Iris Dorothy Micucci 97, of Portland, died at her home on July 17th, 2026. She was born in Blaina Wales UK on October 23rd, 1928, to George and Ethel (Thomas) Britton.
Iris grew up in Wales and in Epsom, England. As a teenager in Epsom, she witnessed the WW II nightly bombing of London. In 1946 she moved to the USA. She worked many jobs in her early twenties including a toothpick factory packer, a waitress, and a bookkeeper. She maintained many friendships from these jobs throughout her life.
Iris married Leo Micucci and they moved to their East Deering home where they raised their six children and where she continued to live for the rest of her life. She and Leo built Micucci Grocery together where she worked until she retired at the age of 88. She cherished the many relationships she built with customers and employees. She also volunteered at the Preble Street Soup Kitchen for many years.
Iris was dedicated to love and family. She stayed in contact with her family in Wales and around the world while building her family in the US. She was kind, beautiful, fun, a great cook, and a hard worker. The depth at which she touched so many people can’t be fully expressed in words. She deeply loved her family, her extended family, and her many friends. She had a special way to make each person know that they were very important to her.
Iris is survived by her four sons, Bruce (Virginia) of Windham, Leo of OOB, Rick (Anna) of Falmouth, and John (Julie) of Buxton, her daughter Sherene (Rod) Bernier of Windham, 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Denise Britton of Cumberland and Lydia King of Wales UK.
She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Phyllis Britton, her brother Ron Britton, her husband Leo, her daughter Phyllis Teare and longtime friend Dominic DiMatteo.
We want to thank all of the friends and family that helped with Iris’s care in the last months and years, the wonderful team at Beacon Hospice, and Dr. Robert Fraser.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Thursday August 6, 2026, at St. Pius
Catholic Church, 492 Ocean Avenue in Portland. A Reception will follow in the parish hall.
