Ida L. Haines May 30, 1935 January 12, 2014 Portland - Ida L. (Fredette) Haines, 78, of Allen Avenue, Portland, died Sunday January 12, 2014 at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough, surrounded by her family. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, she was a daughter of Leo and Lena Fredette. For 21 years, Ida worked for the City of Portland and The Barron Center, retiring in 2000. Following her retirement, she became a Foster Grandparent at Lyseth School. For 11 years, Ida enjoyed working with the children at Lyseth. Her foster grandchildren, who affectionately called her Grammie Ida, became her second family. Her hobbies included knitting, spending time with her grandchildren and cooking everyone's favorite, Pork Pie and Creton. She was predeceased by her husband of 33 years, James J. Haines, a son Leo P. Haines and her sister Jeanette LaRoache. She is survived by her children, Pamela Turcotte and her husband Gordon of Westbrook, James Haines and his wife Rachel of Auburn and her daughter -in-law Donna Wheeler of Westbrook. Her grandchildren, Paul Turcotte and his wife Tammy, Nina Haines, Shawn Haines, Mechelle Connolly and her husband Bob, David Wheeler and Kristy Willette. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Paige, Austin, Abbigail, Meghan, Nolan, Christopher, Sarya, Vaeha and her niece JoAnne Cloutier. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014 at A.T. Hutchins, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland from 4-7 p.m., followed by a service at 7 p.m. A special thank you to Dr. Patricia Stogsdill, Nurse Laurie, Gosnell House staff, Lyseth School and the Foster Grandparent Program.
