It is with great sadness that the family of Howard P. Stein announce his passing on Tuesday, January 10, 2024. He was born on May 13, 1958, in Rockland, Maine, the son of the late Stanley Stein and Earlene Stein. Howard moved to Portland at age 9 and attended Portland schools. He held various jobs throughout his lifetime and was most proud of working for the City of Portland, mowing the greens at Riverside Golf Course as well as his most recent position, mowing the grounds on the campus of Southern Maine Community College. Howard was known by his co-workers to be an expert when it came to mowing. No one mowed like Howard did, said a dear friend and co-worker. Howard enjoyed watching sports on TV such as golf, baseball, football, and NASCAR. He was also a novice weatherman, calling family and friends to give them the "real" forecast when storms were approaching. Howard was an outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt. He taught his nephews, adopted nieces, grandnieces, and grandnephews the art of fishing. Howard was also a gardener and always grew ten times what he needed so that he could share his bounty with family and friends. If you needed zucchini or eggplant, Howard was your guy. Howard was friendly, outgoing, and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was always helping others and was generous to many. Howard especially loved visits from his 6 grandnieces and grandnephews. A few fond memories from his nephews are stopping at E.R. Clough General Store on the way to camp on Raymond Pond and 2 weeks later on closing day of camp to fill the kids' pockets and the infamous green box with candy, walks on Portland Trails, getting lost and eventually finding their way back home and listening to stories about his many adventures. Howard was predeceased by his mother, father, sister, Arlette Baldwin, brother James and brother-in-law, Tony Baldwin. Howard is survived by brothers Joseph and wife Anna, Bruce and wife Lynne, nephews Damon Baldwin, Joseph Stein, DO and wife Jamie, James Stein and wife Joanna, Matthew Stein and wife Amber, sister-in-law Patricia Stein, former sister-in-law Maryellen Stein, great nephews and nieces Ryan, Oliver, Taylor, Lilliana, Claire, and Grace. Howard often spoke fondly of his many friends, especially Steve Thibeault, Jeff Kelly and Mike Ney, Bob King, and Althea. A Memorial Service will be held 12 Noon on Friday February 9th at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue in Portland, with visitation for family & friends from 11 Am until time of service.
