Howard Hamlin Small December 6, 1935 February 23, 2016 Howard Hamlin Small, 80, of South Portland died on February 23, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Howard was born in Portland, Maine on December 6, 1935. He was the son of Guy Aston Small and Eva Pennell (Meserve) Small. He graduated from South Portland High School in 1955 and upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy. He attended Portland Junior College and graduated from the University of Maine in 1961. After many years as Documentation Officer for U.S. Immigration and the Housing Officer for Coast Guard Group Portland, he retired happily to enjoy life golfing, traveling, being with family and friends, but especially spending time with his wife. He was happily married for 56 years to Patricia Ann (White) Small. They had four wonderful children: Craig Stanley & Eric William of South Portland, Kirk Philip of Bridgewater, MA, and Kristin Patricia Johnson of Gorham and eight exceptional grandchildren: Jessica Bologna, Madison, Delaney, and Cassidy Small and Maxwell, Grace, William, and Anna Johnson. He also leaves a very caring brother, Stanley B. Small. Our heartfelt thanks to all of Howard's caregivers: Dr. Timothy Baum, Dr. Matthew Dugan and his Physician's Assistant Arlene, Hospice of Southern Maine and to all their wonderful support staff. Additional thanks for the comforting service provided to us by Michael Chapman of A.T. Hutchins. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 10A.M. at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074 or to a charity of your choosing.
