Helen Katherine Pappas April 24, 1921 January 23, 2014 Scarborough - Helen Katherine Pappas, 92, of Portland passed away on January 23, 2014 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. She was born in Portland on April 24, 1921, a daughter of Stratus and Kiriaki (Nicholas) Papas who were natives of Marmara, Greece. She grew up in Portland, graduating from Portland High School in 1938. Helen and her husband, Theodore owned Theodore's Lobster House and later King's Fish & Chips. Helen truly embraced her Greek Heritage. She loved the language, food the music and was known for her Greek dancing. She was very active in the Greek Orthodox Church, Daughters of Penelope and the Women's Auxiliary of the Elks. Helen also loved the holidays, where her family always looked forward to her cooking of pastries, spinach pies and other Greek foods. She enjoyed traveling and playing bridge with her friends. Her biggest love and passion was her family. She is predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Mary Vamvakis and Ida Demarkis and her husband Theodore Nicholas Pappas. Helen is survived by her children Sylvia Swiger and her husband Walter of South Portland, Mary Pappas Burns and her life partner Phillip Reeves of Florida, Nicholas Pappas and his wife Anita of South Carolina, her grandchildren Jimmy Boucouvalas and his wife Jasmin, Louis Tevanian and his wife Kristen, Malcolm Tevanian and his wife LeeAnna and Kimberly Allard Moccia and her partner Kimberly Moccia, as well as her great-grandchildren, Alexander, Christopher, Benjamin and Alexa. She is also survived by her nephew, Nicholas Vamvakis and his wife Carol of Virginia. The family would like to thank the staffs at Deering Pavilion, St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence and Gosnell Hospice for their care and compassion for Helen. Friends and family are invited to visiting hours on Thursday, January 30, 2014 from 4 - 7 pm with The Trisagion to be held at 6pm at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. A private funeral service will be held for the family. Interment will be at Forest City Cemetery, South Portland.
