Obituary

George E. Foster June 3, 1945 October 11, 2014 Gorhama€""George E. Foster, 69, died peacefully at the Gosnell Hospice Home in Scarborough on October 11, 2014 with family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 3, 1945 in Skowhegan, the son of E.D. (Bud) Foster Jr. and Ethelyn (Fish) Foster. George grew up in Farmington and was a graduate of Farmington High School in 1963. He went on to join the US Army in 1965 serving as Sargent in both Vietnam and Korea. George's wonderful personality was very much responsible for his successful career in sales. His work included 20 years at Porteous, Mitchell& Braun and over 25 years at a job he dearly loved, Sales Manager at Skillful Home Recreation. George was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church in Gorham. He and Kathleen attended services there whenever George was able. His church provided support to George and his family as George went through the end of life process. Once diagnosed with cancer, George never gave up. He maintained a cheerful outlook throughout the struggles of cancer treatment. George maintained a strong will to live and had an optimism that was an inspiration to those around him. George's contagious laugh and gift of joy will be sorely missed. He enjoyed life and nature, often taking photos of the animals in the wildlife preserve behind his home. George, Kathleen and Ben have enjoyed camping for years as Ben grew up and they have enjoyed many happy times at Loon Lodge on Parks Pond. Favorite times included roaring camp fires, watching the Loons and Eagles, reading on the sunporch and puzzles at night. It was the simple pleasures of life that made George content. A good mystery novel, a day trip with a delicious lunch at a favorite restaurant, and following his sports teams, the Red Sox and the Patriots, were some of George's greatest pleasures. During the last Patriot's game that George was able to enjoy, he was surrounded by loved ones who laid George's Patriot's shirt over the hospital bed. The best part was that the Patriot's won the game! George leaves behind a wonderful supportive family who he dearly loved and who loved him in return. The love of his life, Kathleen Walsh of Gorham, son, Benjamin Theriault and his wife Nicole of Essex Junction, VT along with six siblings and their spouses. Leslie Foster-Michaud of Augusta, Carol Ann Powers of Livermore Falls, Audrey and Jeff Brown of New Sharon, ME, Roger and June Foster of Portland, ME, Lee and Charlene Foster of Stephentown, NY and Bruce and Dawn Foster of Seattle, WA. George is survived by a special niece, Alana Foster of Seattle, WA and a dear friend, Bob Hancock of Freeport, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins that thought the world of George. Special thanks to the supportive staff at the Gosnell Hospice House and to family and friends whose prayers and support by visits and phone calls made it easier for George to endure his last days. A memorial service will be held at First Parish Church, 1 Church St., Gorham on Saturday, October 18th at 11:00am. A reception will follow at the church. Interment will be private at the Veterans Cemetery in Augusta at a later date.
