Obituary

Frederick W. Egger, age 82, died on May 12, 2017, peacefully at home in Portland, Maine surrounded by his family.  He was born in New York City on September 8th, 1934 and resided in Eastchester, New York until moving to Portland, Maine in 2013.  After graduating high school he served in the military from 1955-1957.  He married his high school sweetheart, Eleanor DeRosa, in 1958.  Fred worked in the family wholesale meat supply business and subsequently established his own home improvement business.  He was known for his high-quality carpentry with meticulous attention to detail.  An expert gardener, he treated his family and friends to home-grown fruits and vegetables throughout the growing season.  He was a World War II buff and enjoyed lifelong learning about this era in history.  He is predeceased by his newborn son, John, in 1962.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor; his sisters, Sandra Fearns of Bluffton, South Carolina and Arline Diebold of Guadalajara, Mexico; two daughters, Maria Egger and her husband, Heath Paley of Portland, Maine and R.M. Alma Egger, OSB (formerly Diane) of the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Connecticut; two granddaughters, Leah Smith Shelley and her husband Michael of Baltimore, Maryland and Alison Smith of Astoria, New York.  He also leaves behind his precious cat, Philip.  Visiting hours will be at the family home on Monday, May 15th from 12 noon to 2 PM and 5 PM to 7 PM.
