Obituary

Frances Grace Buck Foster September 26, 1931 October 27, 2014 PORTLAND - Frances Grace Buck Foster departed on Monday, October 27, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She died from heart failure in the company of her most dedicated caregiver and best friend, her daughter. She was born Sep. 26, 1931 to Doris and Clinton Buck of Monmouth. She had an older sister, Priscilla Buck Peard. They enjoyed an 80 year relationship that spanned the greatest challenges of the 20th Century. The family grew up in Elliot. Her father Clinton built submarines in the Portsmouth, NH shipyard. Her mother got an accounting degree from Colby College. The family moved to Augusta following WW II where they both worked for the State. Fran acquired an Associate's degree of Nursing at Mass. General Hospital in Boston and enjoyed seeing Perry Como and the sights of the city. She worked at Camp Maranacook one summer as the camp nurse and fell for a good looking Livermore fellow named Merriman Collins Foster. They soon married in 1954 and had their first son, James, in 1955. They moved to South Portland and Merriman started teaching school. Four other children followed and the kids were raised in Scarborough. They remained married for 53 years until Merriman died in 2007. Frances worked as a nurse both in hospitals and private duty. She maintained an active interest in medicine throughout her healthy life. Frances was known as ""Mimi"" to her grandchildren. She enjoyed crafts, the autoharp, art, finding bargains, good reads, Scrabble, and candid conversation. She is survived by her five children; James Foster, M.D. of Portland, Lori Sturgeon, head cardiac nurse at MMC, of Buxton, Lee Foster, gallery owner, of Yarmouth, William Foster, surveyor, of Durango, CO., and Duncan Foster, biochemist, of Fitchburg, Wis. Mimi has 10 grandchildren who enjoyed her accessibility and eccentricities. She passed shortly after her 83rd birthday in the company of her clan. Her carefree style, blueberry patch, and inclusiveness will be greatly missed. The day we lost our Mom, heaven gained an angel wearing Goodwill on both the inside and the outside. A memorial service will be held November 1st at 3:00pm at the First Congregational Church at 167 Black Point Rd., Scarborough to celebrate her life. A Bean Supper Pot Luck will be held immediately following the service. Dress is casual. To share memories and condolences with the family, please go to www.athutchins.com
