FLORENCE M. JOHNSON   Portland-Florence "Flossie"  Johnson, 83, passed away peacefully at Sedgewood Commons on October 17, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.  Flossie was born in Portland on August 8, 1939, the daughter of William and Ruth (Eldridge) Rourke. Flossie attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School, Class of 1957.  Following high school, Flossie had a long and successful career in the underwriting, sales and service components of the insurance industry at Maine Bonding and Commercial Union and was very well respected by her colleagues and those she supervised and mentored, for her high level of professionalism and expertise balanced with her friendly customer-focused approach.  After a long and successful career, she seized the opportunity for early retirement to enjoy her golden years. When her own health declined and she was no longer able to live at home, Flossie moved to Sedgewood Commons in April 2022 where she was a resident until her passing. Flossie was known as a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, co-worker and friend, but most of all she was a wonderful mother and had the deepest love for her children. She touched the lives of all who knew her with her beautiful essence, delightful personality and enjoyable sense of humor. She loved her daily martini, an occasional cigarette (Arlene, now that she has joined you, we hope she has returned your infamous ashtray!), reading a good book, playing cards and doing anything that challenged her mind including her crosswords, cryptoquote solving, Sudoku, and playing Words with Friends with her many contacts.  She also traveled to Florida with her daughter and friends and quickly became a lifelong senior member of the renowned Turtle Club following a very short introductory period. Flossie is survived by  her beloved children daughter, Leanne Noyes, of Portland who moved in with her to care for her since Flossie's stroke in October, 2020, and her son, Albie, of Westbrook who always helped her with her home and computer repairs. She also leaves behind her loving grandchildren, Brittany Noyes and Chaney and Jenny (Boutilier) Noyes, and great grandchildren, Chloe and Max, all of Vermont. In addition, she leaves her behind her brother, Jack and wife, Patricia Rourke, of Portland, her brother, Steve and wife, Debbie Rourke of Portland, many nieces and nephews, and her dear friends, Jane Robie, Lenora Foley, Maria Ascanio and  the late Arlene Pesce.  She was predeceased by her sister, Connie Rosario. She is also leaves behind her furry friends, her kitties, Monarch and Opal. We, Flossie's family, would like to express our sincere gratitude for the compassionate and loving home care provided by Caroline, Joanne, Jenn and Lisa from Martins Point Healthcare. Thank you for making a difference in her life. We would also like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Sedgewood Commons for their wonderful and compassionate care and special thanks to the staff of Compassus Hospice, for their loving kindness, compassion and support.   A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to: STRIVE/PSL Services, 28 Foden Road, South Portland, ME 04106 in honor of Florence Johnson.
