Ernest (Speed) S. Valente April 9, 1932 July 29, 2013 Ernest (Speed) S. Valente, Jr., 81 of Portland, passed peacefully on July 29, 2013 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House surrounded by his family. He was born in Portland, the son of Ernest S. Valente, Sr. and Mabel Louise Siteman. He attended Cheverus and Deering High Schools. He was a veteran of the National Guard during the Korean War. Speed was a Master Upholsterer at his business (Speed's Auto Top) and was known for his work restoring the inside of antique cars. He was a member of the Columbia Italian-American Club. He was married to Joan M. Loring who died in 1968. They had four children - Steven, Terry, David and Ann. In 1970, he married Dorothy Howell Crawford who had three children - Bruce, Terri and Debbie. The family members came together as one. Speed was known for his fascinating stories and his love for his family and friends. He will be in our hearts forever. He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Dorothy; his sons Steven Valente, Bruce Crawford, and David Valente; his daughters Terri Anthoine, Terry Valente, Debra Moran, and Ann Cascarino; his sons-in-law John Moran, Rob Cascarino, and the late Neal Anthoine; and his daughters-in-law Robin Crawford and Pam Valente. He has 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, many nephews, nieces, all of their families, and many, many friends. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Wilson, Betty Moberg, Dorothy Valente, and Carolyn DuEst. Special thanks to Speed's ""hero"" , Dr. Tracey Weisberg as well as Dixie, Dawn and April and to the Gosnell House for their special care and compassion. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2013 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at A.T.
