Emily Lyon Hinds July 9, 1913 October 4, 2012 Scarborough - Emily Lyon Hinds, 99, of South Portland, passed away peacefully at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on October 4 with her devoted daughters by her side. Emily was born on July 9, 1913 in Brewer, Maine. The daughter of the late Professor Alpheus Crosby Lyon and Julie Cushman Lyon. She was predeceased by her brother Alpheus Lyon, Jr. and her aunt Elsie Lyon Pendleton, her husbands Prescott Ward and Donald Hinds. Emily is survived by her sons, Jeffrey Ward and his wife Beverly of Port Tobacco, MD, David Hinds of Ashland, MA, her daughters, Audrey Mason and her husband Arthur of Windham, ME, Donna Hinds of South Portland, ME and Hilda Hinds of Gray, ME, her grandchildren, Kimberly Reiter, Jean Link, Jeffrey Ward, Robert Rossi, Brian Mason and Susan Worcester. Her great grandchildren, Lindsey and Megan Link, Karsen and Kevin Ward, Gavin Nicholson, Cecilia Rossi and Edie Oehlschlager. Emily cherished her summers sailing between Bangor and Islesboro where the family had a cottage. She often reminisced about island dances, Uncle Billy and her contemporaries, dating back to 1917. Her memories of these island experiences were the happiest of her life and reliving them always brought a smile to her face. She loved this island and she was ""The Islander"" Emily's local favorites were Bug Light, Two Lights and Portland Head Light. She was the self appointed unofficial harbor master, so was always busy tending these sites. Emily graduated from Bangor High School in 1930 and the University of Maine 1970 after a 40 year hiatus to raise her family. Without her awesome language skills, none of her children or grandchildren would have passed high school French and or Latin. Those who loved her knew what a remarkable and knowledgeable woman she was. She was an inspiration to us all and a magnificent lady in the truest sense of the word. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Gosnell Hospice House for their limitless compassion and superior care. Arrangements are under the care of A.T.
