Obituary

Emery J. Girouard passed away on June 16, 2025 at the age of 99 after a brief illness. He was born in Fitchburg, Mass. of French/Canadian ancestry. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Sylvia (Auclair) Girouard, daughters Karen Simpson and Linda Bickford, granddaughter Dana Sparrow and grandsons Adam Bickford and Ross Bickford, along with numerous great grandchildren. He was a life long communicant of St. Hyacinths Church in Westbrook. Emery was a printer by trade. First working for several print shops in Portland, including Progressive Printing , Manifold Co., and Portland Printing Co. He then worked in the Print Testing Department at SD Warren Paper Co. in Westbrook for 20 years, retiring in 1982. He also ran his own small printing business out of his basement. Business cards were his specialty. Everything had a label. If anything needed to be marked or needed instructions, there was a label or card attached. The surviving brother of three born to Hector and Alma Girouard. He joined the Army during WW2 and served honorable in Italy as an MP. He was a talented carpenter, building his own home. A musician along with his brothers. His favor instrument being the accordion. Other hobbies included making audio and video tapes, his computer, travel, gardening and dining out. His lifelong dream was to retire and move to Florida for the winter which he did at the age of 58. He and his wife Sylvia spent 27 years living 6 months of the year in Springhill, Florida surrounded by close friends from Westbrook that also migrated there during the winter months. They include the Meteviers, and his brother, Father Robert Girouard. He was a person who quietly went thru life providing for his family. Whether it be babysitting for grandkids, helping others with building projects, he was there. Part of the greatest generation in the true sense in that he sought no recognition for the support he gave to family, friends and church. His hard work and sense of duty lasted til the end.
