Elizabeth Sarando Hamlin February 27, 1937 June 6, 2012 Cape Elizabeth - Elizabeth Sarando Hamlin, 75, of Cape Elizabeth passed at home with family by her side, on June 6, 2012, after a courageous twenty four year battle with breast cancer. Elizabeth was born in Boston, MA, February 27, 1937, daughter of the late Ella Millett Sarando and Charles Aristidies Sarando. She graduated from Deering High School in 1955, and Westbrook Junior College in 1957, Valedictorian of her class. She was an accomplished pianist, enjoyed fine literature and writing. Elizabeth met her loving husband, Richard A. Hamlin, and married in 1957. She spent much of her married life raising four active children. Elizabeth was involved with Christian education at Woodfords Congregational Church and was a choir member. Employment included Unionmutual Life Insurance Company and Katherine Day Morrill pre-school in Falmouth. She cherished her service as the first Social Secretary to Pauline Curtis, dear friend, and wife of former Maine Governor Kenneth M. Curtis during the late 1960's. Elizabeth was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother always putting her family first. She had gracious strength and a loving way that was evident to all who knew her. She cherished time with family and close friends. She was especially proud of her four grandchildren who brought much joy to her life. Fondest memories include family vacations at Chesuncook Lake and Greenville Maine, and a trip to South Africa and Greece when her father was reunited with Greek relatives. Elizabeth is survived by her husband of 56 years, Richard, and their four children; Donna E. Whelan, her husband Michael and their children, Alisha and Thomas, of Gilbert, AZ, Diane E. Hamlin of Cape Elizabeth, David W. Hamlin of Portland, Debra P. Dyer her husband Thomas and their children Zachary and Emily, of South Portland, and her sister Virginia A. Blackwood of Cape Elizabeth. Elizabeth was predeceased by her brother Charles A. Sarando Jr of Tucson, AZ. Elizabeth's family extends their gratitude to the remarkable Hospice team who helped with her loving care.
