Obituary

Dr. Edward ""Ted"" Lupton White May 24, 1940 September 26, 2014 A brilliant and gentle man has passed from Earth to Eternity. At sunrise, on September 26, Edward ""Ted"" Lupton White, 74, of Westbrook, died peacefully in the arms of his wife, Kathy Eliscu, after a nearly 3 ½ year battle with brain cancer. In his last weeks at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, he was lovingly well-attended and entertained by family and friends. Ted was born in Ithaca, New York, on May 24, 1940, to parents Margaret Lupton White and Kendall Crittenden White. His early years were spent in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Ohio. He was Valedictorian of the class of 1958 at Mount Hermon School (now, Northfield Mount Hermon.) He earned a B. Engineering Physics degree from Cornell University in 1965, where he also joined the popular Sherwoods, a men's a capella singing group. He spent several years as a research physicist and technical writer, then attended Case Western Reserve University where he earned his medical degree in 1973. He completed a residency in psychiatry at UC Davis in 1976. From 1976-2001, Ted served the mental health population in various settings, including private practice, in Stockton and Sacramento, California. During this time, he graduated from the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute, edited the Central California Psychiatric Society Newsletter, and chaired the Ethics Committee for eight years. In 2001, he moved to Maine and worked for ten years as an attending psychiatrist in Adult Outpatient Services at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Throughout his professional career, Ted was a gifted physician, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, a champion of the mentally ill and marginalized. He embodied an honest and studied approach to healing that helped so many, especially those with Dual Diagnoses and addictions. He was a caring role model for resident physicians and colleagues. Ted was a voracious reader of books, a lover of poetry and a poet himself, and a gifted photographer. He truly loved nature, and revered all living things, including bugs, snakes, birds, and other wildlife. He took hikes in the Sierra, skied at Tahoe, and made a ritual of plunging his kayak into the ocean in Maine on Christmas day. He was a hiker and backpacker, skier, runner, gardener, kayaker... if there was a physical challenge, he rose to it. His wife recalls a time they spontaneously drove to Old Orchard years ago, to take part in the Lobster Dip into the Atlantic on a brisk and sunny January 1st. Ted entertained family and friends with stories of his hippie days in San Francisco in the 1960's, of warm and hilarious tales of old times with buddies, and of family vacation trips, sharing his remarkably accepting approach to life, reflecting all things that shaped him. He was musically gifted, vocally and instrumentally, throughout his lifetime. In later years, he enjoyed studying flute with his wonderful young flute teacher, the late Beth Polletto. He was her oldest student! He continued singing with the Sherwoods several times a year, and sang locally with ""On a Wing and a Prayer"" at St. Joseph's Church in Portland. To say he was a wonderful human being would be to sell him short. People enjoyed Ted for his humor, wit, warmth, insight and wisdom. He was patient, adventurous, never turned down a lesson in science, appreciated interesting cuisine but also enjoyed sitting at Starbucks on a Sunday morning, with latte and crumpet, reading the New York Times, or watching a football game on TV, eating a pint of rum raisin ice cream. He didn't have a favorite team; he just enjoyed the event. But most important about Ted was his unique ability to love and share himself with all who came into his life. He leaves an indelible mark, in particular, on his stepchildren, grandchildren, and other family members who benefitted from the way in which he gave of himself. His grateful wife will never be the same, thus was the love they shared, the stuff of which love stories are made. Ted was predeceased by his father Kendall Crittenden White. He is survived by his mother Margaret Lupton White; his wife, Kathy Eliscu; son Randey White, grandchildren Victoria and Samantha; his stepson William Wysowski; his step daughter Cassie (Zarcone) Mehlhop, her husband Paul, grandchildren Emma and David; step daughter Sally Zarcone; sister Sue White; sister Peggy Gravelle, Peggy's husband Ron; brother Kendall; brother Rob and Rob's wife Kate; an amazing and loving group of nieces, nephews, great nephews and great nieces, cousins, cousins-in-law - and the most wonderful friends that anyone could ask for. You know who you are. Yes, you know. He loved you. There will be visiting hours on Friday, October 3, from 3pm to 7pm, at A.T. Hutchins, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland. The funeral mass will be held on Saturday, October 4 at 10am at St. Joseph's Church, 673 Stevens Ave., Portland. Attendees should feel free to wear colorful clothing, as desired.
