Edith Rose (“Edie”) Marino

August 30, 1934 – December 30, 2025

Edith Rose (“Edie”) Marino passed away on December 30, 2025, at 91 years old in Portland surrounded by her loving family.

Edie was born in Portland on August 30, 1934, the youngest daughter of Agostino Germani and Rachele Belfiglio, Italian immigrants. She was raised on Newbury Street, in a close-knit neighborhood referred to as “Little Italy.”

After attending Cathedral Grammar School, she went on to graduate with the distinguished honor of Salutatorian from Portland High School in 1952. Following graduation, she secured employment as an Executive Secretary, first at American Can Company, in Portland, Maine, and later at Shell Oil Company, in South Portland, where she met her future husband, John J. Marino in 1957. She often reminisced and shared the story of their first meeting when she asked him to take his coat off and stay a while. One week after their first date, John asked Edie to marry him, to which she requested a week to think about it. She accepted, they married in 1958 and were happily married until her passing. It was John’s dream come true.

Edie and John raised four children at homes in Westbrook and Portland, Maine. In 1962, Edie made a deposit on what would become their cherished, lifetime family home on Kent Street in Portland. She loved the beauty of Portland, and surrounding areas, including the Eastern Promenade, Two Lights State Park, Portland Headlight, and local beaches and lakes – especially their lake property in Gray, Maine.

The most important occasions in her life centered around family gatherings – holidays and birthdays spent with family at her home, in their homes, and on the lake in Gray. She enjoyed cooking for and feeding family; her authentic, homecooked Italian cuisine was one-of-a-kind. She also appreciated classic movies and cheering on her New England Patriots.

Edie loved babies and thoroughly cherished every precious moment she had with her four children, five grandchildren, and great granddaughter. She was very affectionate, often smothering her babies with too many kisses. None of them ever complained!

Edie and John felt fortunate to travel to Italy in 1984 and 1986 and visit with all her first cousins and connect with their heritage. She often reminisced about their many adventures on those trips.

Edie is survived by her husband of 67 years, her children, Lydia Clark (Ashton), Laura Marino, Anne Mikkelsen (James), John Marino Jr. (Lisa Mae), her grandchildren, Matthew Blake, Jessica Koenig (Ryan), Maria Gagnon, Lydia Clark, and John Mikkelsen, as well as a great granddaughter, Mia Koenig.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her three sisters, Anna DeCarolis, Gilda Nunes, and Lydia Morelli.

At the family’s request, all services will be private.
