Obituary

Edeltraud "Trudy" Griffin October 13, 1920 June 26, 2012 Scarborough - Edeltraud ""Trudy"" Valeria Ellman Leidemann Griffin, 91, of Westbrook died peacefully on June 26th, 2012 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. She enjoyed 90 years of excellent health. She was born on Oct 13, 1920 in Rumburg, Czechoslovakia, daughter of Emma Sturm and Anton Ellmann. She survived the turmoil of WWII Europe. It was there she met and married Franz Leidemann. They had a son Erhard. He was to be Trudy's, as she was better known, only child. Following the war in 1947, Trudy met and married David Griffin of Cliff Island, Maine. They were wed in Stuttgart, Germany. David brought Trudy and Erhard home to Cliff Island where they spent many years learning the island living and following the sea. When her husband David retired from lobstering, they moved to Westbrook. Trudy found a career at Maine Medical Center working as a dietary aide. She relished the atmosphere and excelled for many years. Trudy enjoyed her home, especially her gardens, which brought her much joy during the hours she spent tending them. In the summers Trudy and David enjoyed their camp on Thomas Pond in Raymond. It was there the entire family would gather to enjoy swimming and family time. During the winters the family would get out the mittens that Trudy had knitted and go skiing. Cooking was one of her greatest passions and everyone hoped she would serve up her famous cream puffs, éclairs, and various pies. She was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Allen Avenue, Portland. It was there she further strengthened her personal relationship with Christ. Many members from her church would often visit her to brighten her days as she journeyed toward the face of God. Trudy was crazy about watching tennis and the Red Sox. She would still cheer for them even from her hospital bed. Her family is grateful for the kindness and compassion given to everyone at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Trudy is predeceased by husbands Franz Leidemann and David Francis Griffin; sisters Krystal Ellmann and Gretl Mautsch; brother Karlheinz Ellmann. She is survived by her son Erhard Franz Griffin and his wife Florence (Rioux) Griffin of Long Island, Maine; grandchildren Andrea Leidemann of Falmouth, Maine, Jeffrey Griffin of Windham, Maine, Sherri Kenton of Haverhill, MA, Kristi Leidemann of Westbrook, Maine; great-grandchildren Sarah (Perkins) Varney, Katie (Perkins) Cook, Alex Griffin, Andrew Casey, Ryan Casey, Lauren Leidemann-Smith, Ava Leidemann and great-great-grandaughter Zoe Varney. There will be a period of visitation on Friday, June 29, 2012 from 10-11am, with a service to follow at 11am at A.T. Hutchins, LLC Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. There will be a brief reception at the funeral home after the service, followed by interment at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland.
