Obituary

Kennebunk - Dwight A. Sewell, 85, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Maine Medical Center following a brief battle with cancer. He was born on July 26, 1932, in Washburn, Maine, to Thomas N. and Alice E. (Chapman) Sewell.  He graduated from Washburn High School in 1950 and from the University of Maine at Orono in 1954 with a degree in Agronomy.  Dwight served as a Captain in the Army for 2 years and afterward in the Reserves.  He married Jacqueline J. Jordan on August 16, 1958, and together they raised three children. Dwight retired in 1988 after working for 31 years with the Farmer's Home Administration which included time as the Maine State Director of FMHA.  He then spent a year as Director of the Maine State Potato Board and four years as Director of the Maine State Housing Authority.  He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Anah Temple Shriners. In retirement, Dwight volunteered time at his church as well as for Habitat for Humanity in Naples, FL.  Summers were spent in Portage Lake, Maine and later in Kennebunk.  Dwight was an avid gardener, a loyal Red Sox fan and a fan of camps, be they in the woods or on a lake.  Above all, Dwight enjoyed a family party. Dwight was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Phelan.  Dwight is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jackie, daughter, Donna Walker (A.J.), sons Tom (Donna), Jon (Kelley) and 6 grandchildren, Abby Walker, Emily (Walker) Bowen, Erica Sewell, Marissa Sewell, Kaitlin Sewell and Joshua Sewell.  He will be so missed by his family and friends. Visiting Hours will be held on Monday, September 11, 2017 from 5 to 7pm at A.T. Hutchins Funeral home, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 10:00am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at 12:00pm at the Southern Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery 83 Stanley Rd. Springvale, Maine. The family requests that donations may be sent in lieu of flowers to either of the following: Mayflower Congregational UCC 2900 County Barn Rd.
