Douglas S. Means November 12, 1951 August 6, 2014 Douglas S. Means of Gorham, Maine passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014 after a courageous and hard fought battle with brain cancer. Doug, the son of Winfield J. (Ben) and Janet Smith Means, was born November 12, 1951. He attended Portland, Maine and Simsbury, Connecticut schools and graduated from Simsbury High School in 1970. He graduated from the Forestry program at UNH and went to work with a custom cabinet maker in North Conway, NH. He later began his career as a Distribution Manager and served several businesses in New Hampshire and Maine as a loyal and dedicated employee. For several years he was a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Peterborough and Greenfield, NH and had great respect for the first responders of our country. Doug was the consummate gentleman and a devoted father, brother and uncle. Doug loved the out of doors. He was an avid skier, canoeist, fisherman and hiker. He enjoyed vacationing with his family and friends in places of great natural beauty in the United States and Europe. His greatest passion was family gatherings whether for holidays, cookouts, sporting events or just getting together. Doug was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by the joy of his life, his daughter Stephanie Janet Means of Rochester, NH and her boyfriend, Bobby Tripp: his sister Patricia M. Johnston and her husband Thomas of Bangor, ME; and his brother David L. Means and his wife Cheryl of No. Andover, MA; his niece Kristen Andrews and her husband Jonathan of Lutherville, MD, and nephews Timothy Johnston and his wife Sarah of Portland, ME; Greg Johnston and his wife Nicole of Scarborough, ME; and Camden Means of No. Andover. He had three grand nieces Caroline, Charlotte and Olivia. Doug is also survived by dear and cherished friends Doug and Jane Cramphin and Julie MacDonald O'Leary. The family wishes to thank Anna Lamb, Home Health Visiting Nurses therapists, and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House staff for their caring and compassion for Doug. A graveside service honoring Doug will be held at Evergreen Cemetery Saturday, August 9 at 2pm. Please enter at the Stevens Avenue gate by 1:30pm to proceed to the gravesite.
