Obituary

Dorothy Mae Carroll "Dot" peacefully passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2025 in Canton, GA. Dot was born April 24, 1928 in Portland ME. She was the youngest child of Jesse (dec'd 1964) and Grace Magill (dec'd 1971). She joined her older brother, Robert "Bob", who she admired and loved dearly. Upon graduation from Deering High School, Portland ME, Dot attended Westbrook Junior College studying medical studies. Completing her degree in 1948, she accepted a Medical Technologist position at Maine Medical Center, Portland ME. A career she continued throughout her professional life. Dot loved to travel. She often visited "Auntie", Frances York (dec'd 1999), in Boston MA. In addition, she toured different cities enjoying history and cultural events. Dot was introduced to Edward "Ed" (dec'd 1985) via the mail. He was stationed overseas serving in the Air Force. She was encouraged by his family to write to him, as he was only getting letters from "old" folks. They regularly corresponded forming a strong bond. Upon his return, they discontinued their relationship. Eight months later a cute stuffed panda was delivered to Dot with an engagement ring around its neck. Asked how Ed knew she said yes, since there was not a phone call proposal, she said he knew because I didn't mail the panda back. They were married June 2, 1955 in Boston, MA. Early in their marriage they moved to Minnesota, various locations in Maine, then Maryland. In 1980 Ed accepted international assignments to Canada and Japan, stopping the letter "M" location trend. Living overseas provided opportunity for travel to wonderful places. In 1985, while assigned in Tokyo, on a business trip Ed was killed in a hotel fire. The sudden death was heartbreaking and life changing. Dot relocated to Stone Mountain, Georgia. She moved to be close to her brother, Bob (dec'd 1993), and his wife, Ruth (dec'd 1991). She established a home for herself and her kitties. In 2017, she downsized from her single-family home, moving to senior/asst living. Dot's strongest trait was dedication to her family. She showed unquestionable love and support. She was friendly, helpful, and kind to others. She was independent; never wanting to be a burden. When others did anything for her, she would be quick to say thank you. She did not want to take any advantage of another's time. Dot is survived by her daughter, Deborah Walker (Waleska, GA), Sons David, wife Cindy (Waldorf, MD), and Edward "John", wife Mari (Cumming, GA) Carroll; Grandchildren David Carroll Jr, wife Lina (Newburg, MD), and Morgan Walker (Waleska, GA); Great grandchildren Connor, Tanner, and Marren. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to Good Mews Animal Foundation, 3805 Robinson Road, Marietta, GA 30068. A private funeral service is scheduled Thursday, July 24, 2025 at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland ME.
