Obituary

Dorothy Wodehouse Baird 1923 March 31, 2012 Falmouth - Dorothy "Dolly" Baird, 88, died peacefully on March 31, at Sedgewood Commons. Mrs. Baird, a resident of Falmouth for 18 years, was born in New York City in 1923 and raised in Red Bank, New Jersey. She was the youngest of three children of Francis and Isabelle Wodehouse. She married William Denise Baird in 1941, at the beginning of his long and distinguished career in the U.S. Navy and the Federal government. She took great pride in supporting her husband while he served his country, and embraced her roles as a Navy wife, mother and homemaker. Her family moved often, and lived in Washington, D.C, Maine, California, Texas, Florida, Kansas, Rhode Island, Maryland, Virginia and Panama. Her pleasures included writing, reading, knitting, Golden Retrievers, travel, summers at the beach, professional sports, many friendships and most of all, family time. She enthusiastically encouraged and supported her children and grandchildren in all of their various life endeavors. She was fun-loving, an exceptional hostess, and the life of the party. She will be remembered for her lively intellect, social grace, sense of humor and devotion to family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 50 years in 1992. She is survived by four children and their spouses, William D. Baird, Jr. and wife, Joy Baird, of New Vernon, NJ; Evelyn B. Baird and husband, William Seretta, of Yarmouth, ME; Richard S. Baird and wife, Suzanne Baird, of East Greenwich, RI; and Laura D. Baird-Laylin and husband, Robin Laylin, of Skillman, NJ; along with nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews. Her family is especially grateful to the staff at Falmouth House, VNA Home Health Hospice, and Sedgewood Commons for their kind and compassionate care during her last years.
