David Paul Whitten May 27, 1946 February 23, 2015 Cocoa, FL & Standish - David Paul Whitten, 68, of Standish, Maine and Cocoa, Florida passed away Monday, February 23, 2015 in Rockledge, Florida. A respected and cherished husband, father, and grandfather, beloved man, and a trustworthy friend and confidant to many. David was born May 27, 1946 in Portland, Maine, son of Winslow and Myrtle (Harmon) Whitten. David graduated from Deering High School (64') and went on to study mechanical engineering at LeTourneau University. He was a part of the brotherhood of AO there and formed lifelong friendships that he treasured. David married his sweetheart, Cheryl Steenburg, on July 19, 1969. He worked for General Motors for his entire career, starting with the Terex earthmoving division of GM in Ohio and then working his way to becoming Chief Engineer for Seat Design for GM in Michigan. Though his professional accomplishments were numerous and worthy of great pride, investing in people was his greatest achievement. Beyond his unwavering and constant support of his beloved family, David and his wife devoted their lives to investing in the youth at their church youth groups, he served as a deacon, trustee, teacher, mentor, Michigan State trooper chaplain, Men for Missions representative, he enjoyed singing and was an avid car enthusiast Survived by his wife Cheryl; son and family Scott and Jolie Whitten, Nathan and Crosby of Milford, New Hampshire; daughter and family Jeff and Alissa (Whitten) Messer, Isabella and Anica of Raymond, Maine. Siblings Winslow and Nancy Whitten, Peggy (Whitten) Jordan, Gordon and Joy Whitten, and Alan and Ruthie (Whitten) Griffin, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents, Winslow and Myrtle Whitten, Brother-in-Law David Jordan, and nephews. Visitation will be held Friday, 6th of March at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, Portland, Maine from 5-8 p.m. The Funeral will be held at First Baptist Church, Portland, Maine on Saturday, March 7 at 10AM. Committal services will be held grave side in the spring.
