Daniel “Dan” Hall passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026. He was born in Portland to Edith Walsh and Daniel G. Hall, Jr. of Lewiston. He attended Portland Public Schools and Cheverus High School, serving as President of his class, a role he enjoyed serving. He then attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, graduating in 1960.
Dan went on to marry his best friend, Elvira “Vera” Malia in 1962 and had three children, Daniel, IV, Dennis Christopher and Allyson Malia. He entered business life starting at the National Bureau of Casualty Underwriters. It was there he met his loving wife and mother to their three children.
Dan worked for a short time with N.H. Insurance Company and later went on to join Morse, Payson & Noyes Insurance for 35 years. He retired from Morse, Payson & Noyes as Executive Vice President in December of 1998, upon the sale of Morse, Payson & Noyes to T.D. Bank.
Dan was a member of the Cumberland Club, served on the Board of the Portland Chamber of Commerce, was active in the United Way campaigns for many years, and for over 20 years, he served on the Board of Mercy Hospital as Director and Chairman of the Board. Additionally, Dan served on the Board of Maine Hospital Association in Augusta and was past President of the College of Holy Cross Club of Maine. He was also a longtime member of the Portland Country Club.
Dan was most proud to be a member of AA for half of his life. He took the program seriously and practiced its 12 steps actively living 40 plus years of sobriety.
He loved planning the annual family trips, such as to Disney, England and Italy, among others, and taking his sons to as many professional baseball and football games as he could fit into his busy professional life.
Dan loved his Catholic faith and the Catholic church. He loved the Jesuits and their philosophy.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elvira Malia Hall of Falmouth; his three children: Daniel, IV, Dennis, and Allyson Hall Keown and son-in-law, Wayne A. Keown, all of Freeport; a niece Leslie Leighton; nephews Michael and Paul Leighton and Peter and James Malia and their families. Dan was predeceased by two sisters Carol Gipson and Abigail Hall Leighton.
Per Dan’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours, and a private family burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
