Cynthia J.
Vacca
October 20, 1946 – January 22, 2026
Cynthia J. (Malia) Vacca, 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Maine Medical Center, with her loving family by her side. She was born on October 20, 1946, in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Joseph and Mae Malia.
She grew up in Portland, attended Cathedral School, and graduated from Portland High School in 1965. She was employed by Sun Savings, Shaw’s Westgate, and later retired from the Admitting Department at Maine Medical Center.
She was a longtime, devoted member of Cathedral Parish in Portland. Cindy was a dedicated mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was her pride and joy. She could always be found at her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, school functions, and daily activities. Her warmth and steady presence will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Malia, Sr., and her mother, Mae Malia. She is survived by her son, James Vacca; her daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Jeff Nielsen; her grandchildren, Sarah and Tom Waters, Kevin and Hanna Nielsen, Alyssa and EJ Armbruster, Joe Nielsen and Samantha Levy, and Laura Nielsen and Jayvon Pitts-Young; and five great-grandchildren, Tommy, Colby, Zoe, Cooper, and Jaylen, with two more expected in May and September. She is also survived by her siblings, Judith Malia; Joseph and Sue Malia; James and Terry Malia; Cheryl and Terry Doherty; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
During her time at The Cedars, she enjoyed playing bingo and attending many live music performances. We are grateful for her bingo buddies, whose friendships and shared moments meant so much to her and brought her great joy. We would also like to thank her many caregivers.
