Obituary

Chester E. Butler, Jr. December 14, 1943 July 7, 2012 Portland- Chester E. Butler Jr., 68, passed away on Saturday, July 07,2012 in Scarborough, Maine. Chester was born December 14, 1943 in Portland, Maine, a son of Chester Sr. and Gertrude Tibbetts Butler. He attended Portland High School and was later honorably discharged from the United States Navy. He was employed by Jordan Meats for several years before becoming head chef at the opening of the Merry Manor Restaurant in South Portland. He was also instrumental in opening The Holy Mackerel Restaurant on Commercial Street in Portland. He did trial runs at sea on the Aegis ships out of Bath Iron Works where he was responsible for feeding the entire crew, three meals a day, for the length of the cruise. Chet also managed Canteen Services for several years before injuries forced him to retire. One of Chester's greatest pleasures was entertaining his family and friends at his backyard barbeques during summertime and during many other holidays. Prior to becoming ill he spent many weekends with his buddies hunting and fishing. Many times never catching anything. At one time, he acquired some turkeys and tried to raise them in the basement of their house, against Madelyn's better judgment. Alas, the turkeys didn't like their environment and soon perished. Chester was predeceased by his dearly beloved wife, Madelyn (DiBiase) Butler and his father Chester Sr. He is survived by his mother Gertrude; daughters, Jamie Fitzgerald and Brenda Ellsmore and son Jason Butler; sister, Bonita Dube and brother Lawrence Butler; grandchildren, Patrick and Shandar Fitzgerald, Jessica Ellsmore and a great grandson Branden Ellsmore. Also sisters-in-law Fran Flohr and husband Paul, Louise DiBiase Foote, Jeanne DiBiase and husband George Ouillette and brother-in-law S. Philip DiBiase and wife Barbara and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1 PM on Friday, July 13, 2012 at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St. Portland. The family has requested that attendees dress casually. A reception will follow at A.T. Hutchins, LLC, 660 Brighton Ave. Portland.
