Obituary

Charlotte R. Merrill October 24, 1929 October 14, 2014 -Portland Charlotte R. Merrill, 84, of Portland and most recently Old Orchard Beach, passed away October 14, 2014. Charlotte was born in Boston on October 24, 1929 the second oldest of six children born to Alger and Leola (Ward) Reynolds. She was graduated from Wellesley High School in 1947 and soon after moved to Portland with her family. There she worked for Canal Bank and on August 4, 1951 she married Donald Merrill, her husband for 60 years. Together they had four children. Don's job took the family from Portland to Auburn and Brewer, before returning to Portland in 1967. Charlotte's friendly and social nature was most evident at gatherings with family and friends. Her face lit up every time she greeted someone, making them feel welcome. Family and friends' gatherings were a highlight for her, and many memories were made at her parents' home on Sebago Lake. She loved keeping up with the accomplishments of those close to her, while expressing her pride and support. Charlotte was a member of Woodfords Church in Portland, as well as the Xi Kappa Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi International sorority. She served as an officer for the Maine Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She enjoyed reading and traveling to study American History, knitting, cooking, and spending time at the beach. She was an avid Boston sports fan. Charlotte is survived by her son Stephen Merrill and wife Patty of Windham, son Gary Merrill and wife Tina of Portland, daughter Julie Merrill of Anchorage, AK; seven grandchildren Gregory Merrill, Nicholas Merrill, Jonathan Merrill, Corey Merrill, Catherine Merrill, Max Osgood, Jared Osgood; and two great-grandchildren Jacob Merrill and Sophia Merrill. She is also survived by her sister Rita (Steele) of California. Chy was predeceased by her husband Don, their young daughter Donna, her brothers Arthur Reynolds and Jack Reynolds, and sisters June (Filippone) and Marilyn (Powers). Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Charlotte's life on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at A. T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, with a memorial service to follow at 3:00PM.
