Charles J Wilson August 24, 1927 March 17, 2016 Portland: ~Charles J. Wilson, 88, of Portland passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at the Barron Center. Charles was the son of Charles E. and Marion Katvala Wilson. Charles was born and grew up in Portland (Munjoy Hill) where he graduated from Portland High School in 1945. In 1950 he married Betty A. Wilson and they were married for 65 years. Charles worked and retired from Central Maine Power Company after 45 years. After retirement Charles and Betty loved to travel to visit family. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America for 78 years since age 10. He earned the rank of Life Scout and became a Junior Assistant Scout Master for troop 5. At age 17 he joined the Navy and while in Norfolk, VA he helped with a Boy Scout Troop. When returning to Portland he resumed assistant scout master position for troop 5. He became scout master of troop 10 of Portland in 1964. After being Scout Master he was a district, camp, and unit commissioner. In 1968 he and son Charles received their Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor at Camp William Hinds in the same ceremony. He received many awards; in 1971 he received the Silver Beaver award, which is one the Boy Scouts highest awards. He volunteered and worked at Camp William Hinds for many years during his retirement. He enjoyed woodcarving campsite and Scout Oath signs for Camp Hinds. He also worked at the Cumberland fair grounds, Native American pow wows, and Navy Marine Core Relief Society while visiting Corpus Christi, Texas. He also was a member of the VFW Deering Memorial Post 6859. Charles was a loving caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who thoroughly enjoyed his family. Charles was predeceased by his wife, Betty A. Wilson, son Charles P. Wilson, and his siblings: Ella Mason, Ina May Low, and Warren E. Wilson. Charles is survived by his daughter Diane Bailey and her husband Arthur of Corpus Christi, Texas, son David Wilson and his wife Amanda of Portland, and daughter-in-law Lori Anne Wilson of Gray. Grand children: Christa Bailey Adams (Scott), Michelle Bailey Horne, Cynthia Bailey Allison (Stephen), Mallory Wilson Hammond (Cody) all of Texas. ~Neil Wilson of Gray, Stacey Wilson Grindel (Michael) of Standish and Charles A. Wilson (Holly) of Gorham, 11 Great Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of the Barron Center for their professional and compassionate care and support to our mother and father. Friends and family are invited to visiting hours from 11am - 12:30 pm on Friday March 25, 2016 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral & Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave Portland. Funeral services will follow at 12:30 pm. Interment with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland.
