Carroll W. Shepard, Sr. December 30, 1928 June 15, 2012 Portland - Carroll W. Shepard, Sr., 83, of Portland died on Friday June 15, 2012 after a long illness. He was born on December 30, 1928 in Portland; the son of Ernest and Agnes (Gearing) Shepard. He attended Portland Public Schools. Carroll married the love of his life, the late Martha L. (Curry) in 1948. She predeceased him in 2010. Mr. Shepard served in the National Guard, Armed Forces and the Marine Corps from 1948-1950. He then worked in the bakery business for quite some time which included Cushman's and Nissen's. He then worked at St. Joseph's Manor as a custodian and later worked for and retired from the City of Portland. Mr. Shepard had a huge passion for sports. He was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. He coached Little League, Babe Ruth and men's softball. After many years of coaching, he used those skills with all of his grandchildren. He never missed a game! Watching his grandkids play ball brought true joy to him and his wife. They were always on the sideline cheering no matter what sport was being played. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family; the more the merrier! He loved going to family BBQ's and Sunday dinners were always held at his house. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by his brother, Ralph Shepard and two grandsons, Tommy and Kevin Moulton. He is survived by his six children, Virginia Mora and her husband Bienvenido of South Portland, Judith Foster and her husband John of Lisbon, Patricia Moulton and her husband Thomas of Old Orchard Beach, Pamela Moulton and her husband Guy of Portland, Carroll W. Shepard, Jr and his wife Shari of Westbrook and Paula Lydon of Portland, as well as Marvin Woodbury, who was like another sone to him, of Durham. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and their husbands and wives, 17 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. The Shepard family would like to thank the staff at Maine Medical Center for their compassion and dedication. Visiting hours will be held from 10 - 11 am on Wednesday, June 20, with a funeral service at 11 am at A.T. Hutchins, LLC Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. Immediately following the service Interment with Military Honors will take place at Highland Memorial Gardens, Highland Avenue, South Portland.
