Carolyn J. Sloan August 1, 1948 December 11, 2012 Carolyn Jones Sloan, 64, died at home on December 11th, 2012 in Portland, Maine of complications related to leukemia. Ms. Sloan, born August 1, 1948, was the daughter of J. Livingston Jones and Ruth (Browne) Jones. She was born in Emory Hospital in Dekalb County, Georgia and raised in North Carolina. Carolyn graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1966 and Duke University in 1970. She taught school in Virginia and Mississippi before moving to Ashland, Maine in 1978. She spent the next 34 years in Portland, teaching school in Portland and Cape Elizabeth. She most recently worked for Maine Humanities Council, designing, coordinating, and presenting literacy programs including New Books New Readers, Born to Read, and Let's Talk About It series. Carolyn loved cooking, gardening, and reading, and was an avid water conservationist and environmentalist. She took pleasure in learning, acquiring new information, and sharing it with others. Her love of literature was obvious to all. Surviving are her brothers, Ray Jones of Manassas, VA, Don Jones, and Clark Jones, both of Raleigh, NC, and her sister, Fay Eifler of Potomac Falls, VA, and their families. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Kirk Jones. A service to celebrate Carolyn's life will be held at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland at 3pm on Saturday, January 5th, 2013. Come share and remember the full life she led.
