Carole L. Unruh March 19, 1947 February 4, 2014 Portland - Carole L. Unruh, 66, of Portland passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Berkley, CA on March 19, 1947. Carole attended high school in Walnut Creek, CA and continued her education at Diablo Valley College in Concord, CA. She chose a career as a flight attendant and worked many years with Western and Delta Airlines. Her cheerful attitude and love for people made her the ideal airline employee. Her position also allowed her to travel extensively. Although Carole had lived in many cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and Boston, it was a layover in Portland, ME where her heart told her she must stay. She fell in love with the people, the harbor and the small city appeal and moved to Back Cove in the spring of 1993. After retiring from the airlines, Carole remained busy by working sales at several local businesses including Ports of Call, Shipwreck and Cargo and Pet Quarters. Carole was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan and especially loved Joe Montana. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, bird watching, decorating and shopping. She loved family, friends and good conversation. Carole's love of animals is what she was most proud of. She rescued and cared for many animals throughout her life. Carole is predeceased by her parents, Edwin H. Peterson and Virginia A. Peterson and her sister, Laura Peterson. She leaves behind many friends who were attracted to her magnetic personality and loved her like family. The Sullivans became her second family after Carole and Francie met in college in 1964. They shared many good times throughout the years. Walter and Sharon Lynch welcomed Carole to Back Cove in 1993 and immediately became her family in Maine. Carole's love of animals also started a close friendship with her neighbor Anne Schools in 2007. Their shared concern of animals created a lasting bond. Hallie, Darin and James Glover remain as Carole's connection to California. She is also survived by her beloved cat, Annie. Annie will stay in the care of Birchwoods at Canco where Carole in her short stay touched so many lives with her radiant energy. At her request, there will be no service.
