1939 ~ 2015 Cumberland Carl R. McPherson, beloved husband, father and grandfather, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully Saturday morning at the age of 75. Carl was born in St. Francis, Maine, in 1939. Son of Walter and Lillian Thibodeau McPherson. He graduated from Ashland High School in Aroostook County in 1958. Shortly after, he moved to Portland, Maine and attended the University of Southern Maine and began a career in banking. He met the love of his life, Doris Jean Dyer and they married in November of 1963. Shortly thereafter, they found a quaint home in Cumberland to start a family. Over the next two decades, they made lasting and beautiful memories together as they raised their son, Steve, and daughter, Karen. Throughout his career, Carl worked in the financial industry, and served as president of the S.D. Warren Federal Credit Union. With his sharp intellect and generous spirit, he offered his service to many boards on both the local and national level. Additionally, he was chairman of the board of the Maine Credit Union League. A passionate man, he found joy in the simplest pleasures. After a fruitful and satisfying career, he retired and worked as a substitute teacher and volunteered with the Cumberland Rec. Department. An avid golfer, he loved spending time on the golf course, but his deepest passions in life were his roles as husband, father and grandfather; roles he played with love, affection and gratitude. Carl was often at the local ball fields and high school gym, rooting and cheering for his grand children and home team from the sidelines. Carl was a man with unwavering integrity. He approached life with optimism and a belief that all people deserved to be treated with kindness. He carried a twinkle in his eyes that brought smiles to all those who knew him. Carl was a man who opened his arms and heart wide to family, friends, and strangers. He will be missed by all who knew him, but his family is deeply grateful to have had the honor and privilege to be a part of his life and to call him husband, dad, grandfather and friend. Carl is survived by his wife, Jean McPherson, his son, Steve and wife Lisa McPherson, and their children Elizabeth and Daniel of Johns Creek, GA, his daughter, Karen Gallagher and children Brandon and Catherine Gallagher and her life partner Christopher Ball, of North Yarmouth, and his brother-in-law James Smaha and extended family of Saratoga, CA. Services will be held Tuesday June 9 at 1pm at the Cumberland Congregational Church in Cumberland Center with a reception immediately following at the church. Burial will be private.
