OCEAN SPRINGS, MS - Captain Daniel E. Whyte, 61, crossed the bar on Sunday, July 19, 2026 at his lake home from FTD-ALS. Born August 18, 1964 at the U.S. Naval Hospital - Portsmouth, VA to the late Marilyn J. Brasier and Stephen T. Whyte.

Daniel attended Portland schools then graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1986. He was a gregarious, quick witted, brilliant mind that enjoyed the danger of the sea. Regarded by his peers and crews as an excellent ship handler and problem solver. He commanded operational excellence and believed a captain has three main objectives: to protect human life, to protect the environment, and to protect the asset - the ship and its cargo. Dan served at sea for 25 years working for American Heavy Lift & Maersk Line Limited before joining Chevron in 1991. He acquired his Master First Class Pilotage for San Francisco Bay and Port Everglades ports allowing him to pilot “his” Chevron ships in and out of port. In 2011, he retired as Captain of the Oregon Voyager to be a harbor pilot with the Pascagoula Bar Pilots’ Association. He remained a pilot for 10 years until his early retirement due to illness.

Dan loved fast boats, skiing, and golf. He enjoyed his friends near and far and he never met a stranger. A member of the American Pilots’ Association, International Marine Pilots’ Association, The Pascagoula Propeller Club, and a communicant of St. Michael Catholic Church.

Dan and his brother, Mike, grew up skiing winters and spending summers with their grandparents at Little Sebago Lake—a special place full of family and friends. Dan’s schedule allowed him to follow his beloved Ann to Italy for her career. They skied the Matterhorn, motorcycled through villages, and married in Florence in 1997 (blessed at St. Peter’s in Portland in 1999). Upon returning to the States, Dan’s greatest joy became raising his children. He cherished teaching them to slalom ski, drive boats, fish, jump off the big rock, make campfires, and treating them to trips to the old-time candy store. In 2011, the family moved to Ocean Springs. Dan's pilot partners and families became their southern family, and they quickly settled into a community of good friends. Dan often joked that he had been "smuggled to the North by some Yankee snakes" but finally "came home to the South.

He is survived by his wife Ann Norris Whyte and children Alexander Norris Whyte and Samuel Edward Whyte, brother Michael C. and wife Teresa R. and son William M. Whyte, half-brother Hon. Matthew Whyte and wife Tina and children Steven, James, and Paulina, Uncle Wayne A. Brasier, Cousin Bruce E. Brasier, and many family members. He is predeceased by his parents and cherished grandparents, Arthur E. Brasier and Edith Adelaide (Redmond, Brasier, Lindsey). Father-in-law Ronald E. Norris, and nephew Nicholas R. Norris.

The last port of call for Pilot10 will be in Calvary Cemetery, eight bells and all's well.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday August 4, 2026, at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave. Portland, ME 04102. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church 72 Federal St. Portland, ME 04101. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the Singing River Hospice of Light, Home Instead, and Beacon Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of Captain Daniel E. Whyte to Maine Maritime Academy Foundation, Mariner’s House (Boston, MA), or the Pascagoula Propeller Club.
