Betty A. Beem December 14, 1922 July 20, 2013 Betty A. Beem, formerly of Westbrook, died July 20, 2013, in Yarmouth. Betty was born December 14, 1922 in Bath, Maine, and was the daughter of Paul M. and Mildred M. Gibson of Portland. She graduated from Deering High School in 1940. She then studied early childhood education at Westbrook Junior College (Class of 1942) and Lesley College (Class of 1945). In 1948, Betty married E. Allen Beem, Jr., also of Portland. The Beems raised three sons together - Ed, Paul and Dana. The family lived in Maine as well as Groton, Massachusetts, and Pawtucket, Rhode Island, while Allen was working for Metropolitan Life Insurance. They settled in Westbrook in 1960 and lived there until 2011 when both Betty and Allen moved to Brentwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Yarmouth, Maine. The family wishes to express its thanks to the Brentwood staff for the wonderful care Betty and Allen received. Betty taught nursery school at both the Catherine Morrill Day Nursery School in Portland and Allyn Day School in Westbrook. She later sold real estate for ERA Gagnon in Westbrook. An avid golfer, Betty was a past member of Gorham Country Club and loved competing in Ladies' Days tournaments. She also enjoyed her bridge club and was a very fine amateur watercolorist. But first and foremost Betty was a devoted wife and loving mother. She is greatly missed already by the four Beem boys she left behind as well as her entire family and friends. Both Betty and Allen were members of the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church. Betty is survived by her husband Allen, son Edgar A. Beem, III and his wife Carolyn of Yarmouth; son Paul C. Beem and his wife Marji Jean Harmer Beem of South Freeport; son Dana M. Beem of Windham, brother William Gibson and his wife Sarah of Westbrook; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A graveside committal service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, July 25, 2013, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waites Landing Road, Falmouth.
