Avery DeWitt Blodgett 1920-2022   PORTLAND - Avery Blodgett of Portland died peacefully on Oct. 30, 2022 at the Barron Center at the age of 102. Avery was born in Gardiner on August 18, 1920, the daughter of Theodore X. and Luvey Wilson Myshrall. She attended elementary and high school in Houlton where she met and married Walter DeWitt in 1938 and became the proud parents of their only son Charles. Her early married life was spent as a devoted mother and homemaker. During these years Avery and her family lived in various central Maine communities, one of which was Owl's Head, where she was one of the few people to hear the German submarine depth charges fired off the coast of Maine during the early years of World War II. When the war progressed and her husband left for Naval duty she and her son moved to Augusta. When family duties lessened Avery worked as an office manager for Health Tex in Gardiner. She retired in 1983 after 20 years of dedicated service. After many years as a widow, Avery married John Blodgett in 1980 and together they enjoyed time at camp and working on projects around their property. Avery was always a very active person and you would frequently find her cleaning, organizing, fixing and building "things". She loved gardening, sewing, reading about history, walking and spending time with family and friends. Avery saw and experienced many industrial and cultural milestones in her 102 years, as well as countless amazing inventions we take for granted in modern life. From one room school houses, the invention of the television, the creation of many electric and modern conveniences, the transition from coal to oil heat and too many historic events to count. While she saw the world change around her for ten decades, one highlight of her personal accomplishments was shooting a 725 lb, 12 point bull moose when she was 67 years old! Avery was predeceased by her first husband, Walter DeWitt, in 1969 and by her second husband, John Blodgett, in 1989 as well as her daughter in law Ann DeWitt in March of this year. She is survived by her son Charles DeWitt of Topsham and by her grandchildren John DeWitt and wife Sarah of Sidney, Charles DeWitt of Australia and by Laura DeWitt Begley and husband Mark of Windham. She also leaves behind nine great grandchildren and special friends Keith, Lauren, Erica and Philip Dubois. Special and a heartfelt thank you to the staff and caregivers at the Barron Center as well as the COMPASSUS hospice team for the wonderful compassionate care they gave to Avery. A graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 11:00 a.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred.
