Arlene Mae Wood November 19,1922 December 9, 2013 Scarborough - Arlene Mae (Swendsen) Wood, 91, of Portland passed away at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on December 9, 2013. She was born in Westbrook on November 19, 1922, the daughter of Charles and Lorena (McKeague) Swendsen. She grew up in Westbrook, graduating with honors from Westbrook High School. She later moved to Portland and with her husband raised their family in the house where she has lived for the last 66 years. Arlene had many interests, including traveling with her husband, especially on cruise ships, had a love of Thai food and was a member of the Westbrook Women's Club. She felt strongly about animal rights and supported a variety of animal charities. Arlene was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Carleton Wood and her daughter-in-law, Marcy Wood. She is survived by her son Bruce Wood and his partner Debby Grace of Framingham, MA, her daughter Pamela Gelberg and her partner Bill Loeffler of Gorham, her grandchildren David Gelberg and his wife Hollie of Los Angeles, CA, Darrell Wood of Haverhill, MA, Sloane Calvert and her husband Dan of Framingham, MA, her great-grandchildren, Mason Calvert, Madison Calvert, Ryan Wood and Justin Wood as well as her beloved sister-in-law, Dorothy Turk and her family, her nephew Russell Swendsen and her very special cat, Chester. The family would like to extend their thanks to Arlene's special friends, Mike and Terry Gelberg, Bonnie Emery, Ronnie Kelsen, Marnie Timberlake, Georgette Flaherty and David and Nancy Handwerker. The family would also like to thank the warm and loving staff of the Gosnell House. There will be a private burial at a later date for friends and family.
