Anthony M. Alves November 26, 1932 June 29, 2012 Scarborough - Final Voyage of Anthony (Tony) Alves, Jr., 79 of Scarborough formerly of Vassalboro. Tony passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 29, 2012. He was born in Augusta on November 26, 1932 to Antone M and Adeline (Pacheco) Alves, Sr. Tony attended Portland Schools and he was honorably discharged from the US Army as a Corporal after serving in the Korean War. Tony served as a Merchant Marine with Texaco, Gulf, Hess & Mobil for over 45 years. His on shore time was spent working for Haskell & Hall throughout New England. Some of the buildings that he took great pride in, are the courthouses and churches that, to this day, still hold their beauty. Tony enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife dancing and camping with his family, always creating some of the most beautiful fire pits that were left behind for others to use. As a young man, Tony learned the art of rope/line splicing, which is a way to make key chains/boat lines/dog leashes/monkey fists/etc, thus leaving behind many cherished memories for his family. He also loved working his land in Vassalboro and creating a ""camping area down by the lake for his children and extended family. Some of his favorite activities include playing cards, especially cribbage, cooking, telling stories, coin collecting, horseracing and the outdoors. Spending July 4th on Peaks Island with family brought him great joy. He was a member of the Moose Club, VFW, The Eagles and the Knights of Columbus. Tony was predeceased by his parents and a sister Adeline Nordfors. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Erlene Scovil Alves of Scarborough; three sons, Rick Wright and his wife Ann of Kentucky, Jim Wright and his wife Bunny of Oklahoma and Tony Alves of Portland; three daughters, Angie Palestini and her husband Nick, Mary Alves, and Kathy Alves and her partner Patti Boucher all of Portland. Tony is also survived by two brothers, Joseph Alves of Portland and Eugene Alves of Florida, along with four sisters, Rita Estabrook of Westbrook, Angie Magno and Lorraine Allen both of Portland and Mary Nauroth of California; as well as, nine grandchildren, Jimmy, Mandy, Heidi, Cynthia, Elsie, Anthony, Nicolas, Kayla, Robbie, Jessica and five great grandchildren, Seth, Tyler, Colin, Noah and Macy Rose. His granddogs, Caesar and Maggie also survived him. The family would like to thank the Gosnell House for all their care and a special thanks to cousin Barbara. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Tony's life on Friday, July 6, 2012, at A.T. Hutchins, LLC, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 AM. Interment with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
