Obituary

Anne Jeannette ("Jean") Hoffenkamp July 24, 1947 June 29, 2014 Anne Jeannette (""Jean"") Hoffenkamp, of Kennebunk, passed away in her home on Sunday, June 29, 2014, surrounded by several beloved family members and dearest friends. Jean was born in Chicago, Illinois, the 2nd daughter of John and Ann (Farrell) Hoffenkamp. Jean attended Catholic elementary and high schools, where she excelled academically in all scholastic areas. She graduated from the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle Campus, in 1969 with a degree in sociology. Jean worked as a social worker in Chicago for several years and then began a very successful career with the CNA Insurance Company. After 24 years with CNA, Jean decided to embark on yet another career and after attending the prestigious Wellness & Massage Training Institute of Chicago, Jean became a licensed massage therapist in 1996 and proud member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and nationally certified (NCTMB) as a Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork specialist. Massage therapy proved to be one of the great passions of her life; it fulfilled her need to find holistic remedies for both body and soul and, also in 1996, Jean became a Second Degree Reiki Practitioner. In 1997 Jean and her beloved late husband, Franklin James (""Jim"") Harte, moved to Kennebunk from their home in Oak Park, Illinois, and Jean established a thriving massage therapy business. Jean formally retired from her practice in May, 2014. Jean was a brilliant, vibrant woman with a lifelong passion for social and economic justice. She was a lifelong progressive Democrat and proud to be called a feminist and liberal. She gave generously of her time and finances to many progressive causes throughout her life, beginning with her work with Women Employed in Chicago in the 1970's; her association with Women Employed led to her becoming an expert on wage prejudice against female workers and she testified before Congress, as well as the Illinois State Assembly, on the impact that income inequality had on women and their families. Jean brought her passion for fairness and justice with her to Maine and she supported the York County Shelters and Food Pantry in Alfred, the New School in Kennebunk, Animal Welfare Society of York County, the Kennebunk Land Trust, Laudholm Trust, First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church Kennebunk, and numerous other national and international organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center, Women Employed, Amnesty International, Habitat for Humanity, Native American Rights Fund and Oglala Lakota College, Green Peace, Emily's List, and National Resource Defense Fund. She was also a founder, incorporator and officer of SOH02 (Save Our Water), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Maine's water resources and whose mission statement is ""recognizing water as a public trust, the mission of SOH02 is to prevent large scale water extraction for resale KKW watershed."" Jean is survived by her sister and brother-in law, Kathleen and Leigh Heflin; her brother Dennis Hoffenkamp; and her brother and sister-in-law, William and Angie Hoffenkamp. She is also survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews, godchildren and many dear close friends who feel blessed and honored that Jean considered them family. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held to honor Jean's beautiful life on Saturday, July 12, at 11:00 AM at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, Kennebunk. In lieu of flowers, Jean requested before her death that donations be made to the First Parish UU Church or other organization that she so passionately supported.
