Ann Marie Asali September 11, 1930 March 31,2016 Portland Ann Marie (McLain) Asali, 85 passed away peacefully at her home Thursday, March 31, 2016. Ann was born on September 11, 1930 in Calais, ME the daughter of the late Edmund and Martha McLain. One of eight girls, Ann attended the Immaculate Conception Catholic Grammar School and Calais Academy where she participated in basketball and cheerleading. Ann moved to Portland in 1951. Eventually through friends met Andrew Asali. They married May 8, 1953. Andrew predeceased her August 29, 2003, shortly after 50 years of marriage. A few of Ann's early employments include an office clerk at Porteous, Mitchell & Braun and Canal Bank. Her last employment was with Government Employees Credit Union of Maine (now known as cPort Credit Union). She retired in 1992 after 25 years with the credit union. Throught the years Ann enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and cake decorating. She baked and decorated many family and friends wedding and birthday cakes. Ann loved spending time with her sisters, especially on the sister trips they had taken together in years past. Ann had a special relationship with her two sister-in-laws, Angie and Diddy, and a special bond with her sister, Honey. Throughout these most recent years the highlight of her days were spent enjoying her grandchildren and great grandchildren, daughter and son-in-law. We will miss her dearly. Besides her parents and husband, Ann was predeceased by her sisters, Joan Mahar, Jacqueline Dotan, Nancy Mosher, Frances White Mary Hill and Jane Reinhart. She is survived by her daughter, Maria and son-in-law, Ronald Hebert; grandson, Derek Hebert and his partner Danyle Appleton of Portland, granddaughter, Sarah Scaplen and her husband, Mark of Gorham; great grandchildren, Anthony, Kyle, Ryan, and Nathan Hebert; Damian Cobb; Hadley and Declan Scaplen. She is also survived by a sister, Joyce Scharbo of Long Island, NY, a brother-in-law, Albert Asali and wife, Joyce of Portland, sister-in-law, Angelina McMann and husband Harry of Falmouth and over 40 nieces and nephews. The family would like to give thanks to the VNA Home Health and Hospice who made it possible for Ann to remain in her home during her illness, with a special thanks to Cheryl and Sarah who often brighten up her day with their visits. Friends and family are invited to visiting hours from 4 - 7 pm on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral & Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 10am at St. Peters Catholic Church, 72 Federal Street, Portland. Interment will follow at New Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VNA Home Health & Hospice, 50 Foden Road, South Portland, ME 04106.
