Obituary

Anastasia T. Gordon 1947 - 2015 Portland - Anastasia T. Gordon ""Anna"" passed peacefully, Monday, July 13, 2015, while accompanied by her family. She was 68 years old and had battled pancreatic cancer for over two years. She was born May 25, 1947 to Samuel Garcia Santiago (deceased) and Eulalia Garcia Figueroa Rios in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. Eulalia left Puerto Rico, with Anna and her new sister, in October 1949, to join her husband in New York. Two more siblingsa€""Samuel Jr. and Eulalia were born there. In 1962, Anna graduated from Incarnation Parochial School in Washington Heights. She attended Holy Cross Academy through 1963 before transferring to George Washington High School where she earned a Business Diploma. Anna began her early work career in banking at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company in New York, and continued to work there after it converted to Chemical Bank. At the bank's upper Manhattan location, she served many ""distinguished"" customers, including the young Henry Winkler, before he gained fame as ""The Fonz."" Anna proved a boon for the bank and her customers because, whether they knew it or not, she could recall their account numbers by simply viewing their faces! Anna was a true homebody but, in 1971, her sister ""dragged"" her to a fundraiser where she met her future husband, Stephen Gordon. The smitten couple married on March 17, 1973 and, shortly after, relocated to Maine. They initially worked in Bangor, then moved to Charleston, where Anna learned to love all the outdoor activities Maine offers. In 1976, Anna and Stephen moved to Portland where two sons-- Daniel Haywood (1977) and Albert Douglas (1979) were born. In Portland, Anna trained and became a CNA at Seaside Nursing Facility. There she served her patients, for over 22 years, with utmost skill and compassion. But, while Anna touched countless lives with her empathic care, inevitably, people remembered her for her winsome, warm smile. It has been heartwarming for family to hear from her coworkers and patients about how much Anna's caring helped people to improve their quality of life. Anna is survived by her loving husband and sons: Stephen, Daniel and Albert; her mother and sisters: Eulalia Garcia Figueroa Rios, Marcelina Camacho and Eulalia Ruiz of New York; her brother, Samuel Garcia, Jr. of Gainesville, Florida; an aunt, Victoria Garcia Figueroa; nieces and nephews: Peter, Carlita, Christina, Rueben and Eulalia; and additional family and friends in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Family members extend heartfelt thanks to all the people who supported and nurtured Anna during her valiant struggle: The medical and nursing staff at Mercy Hospital and The Cedars Nursing Home; the VNA and Life Stages personnel: especially, Cara, Erica, Maddi and Hadas; and the incomparable staff at Seasidea€""especially Carole, Cheryl, Keith, Janessa, Karen, and others who helped ease her transition. To Sandy D. and Courtney B., thanks a million for coming through! Services provided by A. T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, Portland.
