Aftin H. Doughty, Sr. "Rocky" March 22, 1929 January 16, 2014 Portland - Aftin H. (Rocky) Doughty, Sr., of Portland, age 84, passed away after a short illness on January 16, 2014. The son of Aftin L. Doughty and Harriett McCullum Doughty, he was born in Portland on March 22, 1929. He was raised by his grandmother, Ethyl Colby Doughty and her partner Jack Griffin, and attended Windham schools. Aftin was stationed in Germany, serving in an Army artillery division in Germany, where he first learned he was mechanically inclined. He met Beverly A. Cooper at a dance at the Redman's Hall in South Portland. They married on September 17, 1950. He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Doughty, sisters Dianne G. Wright Sturgeon, Sandra L. Wright Moore, and children Aftin H. Doughty, Jr. and his wife Denise Green of Kingston, NH, Naleen A. Mayberry and her husband Bruce C. Mayberry of Yarmouth, ME., Kendalee G. O'Connor and her husband James O'Connor of South Portland, and Leland C. Doughty of New Gloucester, grandchildren Courtney A. Downs of Windham, Clifford A Mayberry of Boston, and Abby R. Doughty of New Gloucester, and three great grandchildren. Aftin was a master automobile mechanic, owning Rocky's Mobil on the corner of Brighton Avenue and St. John Street in Portland, and subsequently Rocky's Sunoco on Ocean St. in South Portland. He helped many young people to keep their first cars roadworthy. Square dancing was a favorite activity during his middle years. Aftin was an extremely talented scale modeler. His model of the frigate USS Raleigh is a prized exhibit in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard museum. His primary modeling subjects were World War I & II warplanes, many of which could be flown by remote control. He was the kindest, most fair, decent, and giving person we have ever known. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014 from 4 to 7 pm at the A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home on 660 Brighton Avenue in Portland. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 1:00 pm. at the Williston - Immanuel United Church, 156 High Street in Portland, with a reception following in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider donation in Rocky's memory to the Williston - Immanuel United Church.
