Peter C. Herrick,83, of Portland, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on October 23, 2024. He was born in Portland, Maine on April 30, 1941, the son of Charles and Ruth (Nilsen) Herrick. He graduated from Portland High School.  He served in the United States Navy and was stationed on the USS Wasp.  After serving in the Navy, he married Carol Foley and they settled in Portland. He worked as a welder/fabricator for Southworth Machine Company, Douglas Brothers, and Portland Engineering.  Later he opened his own carpentry, painting, and remodeling business.  There wasn't a job he couldn't do.  He was a master of all trades and always willing to help anyone.   He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend who cherished his grandchildren. He loved hunting and fishing, taking trips to Montana and Alaska for fishing with his childhood friend John O'Neil. He also did a few side jobs with his friend, Hoppy, where they sometimes lost their shirt. Peter spent many hours puttering in the garage building, painting, fixing and jerryrigging anything and everything alongside his 1950 Ford red truck.  He was a meat and potato kind of guy and loved the fact that the kitchen was the center of many family gatherings.  He enjoyed playing cribbage with the family. He was known for always wearing his jellybean or polka dotted welding hats.  People in the community knew him from his hats and often made comments about them.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife Carol Herrick, a sister, Nikki Franklin, and a brother, Russell Herrick.   Surviving are his daughters Susan Townsend of Lisbon, Kathy DePersia and her husband Jeff of Connecticut, Nikki Paige and her husband Christopher of Portland, and Diane Herrick of Brunswick. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Cody and Jason DePersia and Megan and Ryan Paige. His surviving sibling is Jane Traylor. Peter's family is grateful for his caring hospice nurses Heather, Tara, and Kathy-Sue from Northern Light Homecare and Hospice. Friends and family are invited to visiting hours on Saturday, November 2nd from 11:00 - 1:00 pm at A.T.
