Vincent Louis Marcisso

Vincent Louis. Marcisso Sr, 89, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Mercy Hospital. He was born on August, 31, 1928 in Portland, Maine. He resided in Gorham and Scarborough.

Son of Martin T. Macisso and Christina Cairns. Vincent grew up proud of his family lineage with a strong work ethic.  Attending local schools, and at the age of 16 he went to Sheepshead Bay in New York City to join the US Merchant Marines.  He spent 1944 and 1945 sailing in numerous convoys aiding in WWII efforts, including delivering war materials to Archangel, Russia and numerous South American ports.  He was very proud of his US Merchant Mariner career and still talked about it until his last days with us. After WWII he sailed to multiple foreign and US ports. He continued to sail out of Portland Maine until he met his first love Loraine Audette.  They married on August 28th, 1948 at the Cathedral Church by Bishop O’Leary.

Vinny and Rainy made their home and raised their family on Munjoy Hill.  After he retired from the Merchant Marines he spent time working down on the Old Port waterfront in the fishing industry.   He worked as a salesman at La Touraine Coffee and Prudential Insurance until 1954 when he joined the Portland Fire Department. During this time he served as President of the Local Firefighters Union, he achieved rank of Lieutenant and after a dedicated 25 year career with the Portland Fire Department he retired. In addition to his years working with the PFD he also worked as a building contractor with Rich Aluminum. He owned and trained Sulky race Horses, which included John Evander, and Cadet Marty spanning from New England to Ocala, Florida.

His interests included religion, cooking, dancing, golf, politics, singing, traveling, telling stories, teaching life lessons and most of all being with family. He was a lover of all animals, whom also had their own special bond with papa.

Our dad had many associations including membership at the Italian Heritage Center where he sang in the choir performing in the holiday concerts, the BPO Elks Club, the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus 8144 Mount Calvary Council as a 3rd degree knight.

He was predeceased by his wife Loraine Audette Marcisso, grandchild Nicholas V. Marcisso. Sister Geraldine and brother Joseph and second wife Barbara Gagnon Marcisso whom he lovingly cared for.

He is survived by his two brothers; Martin and his wife Joan of Portland and Samuel and his wife Jacqueline of Westbrook.

Carrying on his legacy are his children, Martin F. Macisso and his wife Sue of Scarborough, Gary V Marcisso (formerly of Munjoy Hill) of Saco and Edgewater, FL, Laurie A. Martin and her husband Stephen of Gorham, Vincent L. Marcisso Jr.  and his wife RaMona of Old Orchard Beach, and Christina Young and partner Dan LaRou of Scarborough; grandchildren; Justina, Sarah, Marty, Renee, Ben, Anthony, Rachel, Christopher, Shannon, Nicholas, Vanessa, and Steven V. along with many great grandchildren; He will also be sadly missed by his great niece Stephanie Macisso, who was lucky to spend lots of time with papa.

We are grateful for the care he received by his Primary Care Dr. Garcia and her nurse Alyson, Dr. Maloney, and the many caregivers at Mercy Hospital and Cardiology unit where he was always quick with a compliment or tease, all along with that twinkle in his eyes and smirk on his face. Finally, we are all grateful to spend his final hours together at the Mercy Hospital Palliative Care Unit in the comfortable private suite where all of his children and much more family where able to be with papa, holding his hand, singing his beloved songs in his ear, and saying goodbye to an incredible man.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017 from 4-7pm at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home 660 Brighton Ave Portland. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 15, 2017 at 11:00am at Saint Anne’s Parish 299 Main Street Gorham. Burial will be at a later date.
