Rebecca Bunton Obituary

Rebecca “Becky” Ruth Bunton, 63, of Peaks Island, Maine, passed away in Scarborough, Maine on August 20, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Becky passed away unexpectedly after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer only one week ago. She dedicated her life to the patients she served as a nurse, her church family, and her friends and family.

Becky was born in Putnam, CT and grew up in Methuen, MA. She graduated from Northern Essex Community College with a nursing degree and University of Southern Maine with her Master’s in Nursing. Becky practiced as a Registered Nurse and Family Nurse Practitioner for over 30 years, including time with Holden Hospital, The Greenery, Brighton Hospital, Maine Centers for Healthcare, and Mercy Addiction Medicine. Patients recall her as a caring provider who would treat her patients like family. Becky retired to Peaks Island, ME in 2015 where she spent many happy times with family and friends and even took up the ukulele.

Becky was a very active member of church groups throughout her life. Her roles in churches included Deacon and Missions Ministry and she undertook multiple mission trips to Honduras. Most recently, Becky was a Lay Leader at Brackett Memorial Church on Peaks Island, ME.

Becky married her beloved husband Robert Bunton 41 years ago in 1977. She was very proud of her family and was a loving and dedicated matriarch. Becky will long be remembered for her passion for Spar Cove on Peaks Island, swimming, bird watching, reading, and traveling. Becky was a strong advocate for social justice causes such as fighting racism and promoting human rights. She is survived by Robert as well as her three beloved children and their families: Jessica Kearns and her husband Robert of Lewiston, ME, Andrew Bunton and his wife Lien of Newton, MA, and Chelsea Spear and her husband Karl of Standish, ME. Becky is also survived by her sister Deborah O’Neil and her husband Barry of Topsham, ME and several beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by daughter Jennifer Bunton and sister Martha Ladre. Becky also dearly loved her 9 grandchildren Jasmine, Jeremy, Dylan, Cooper, May, Lily, Sophia, Mason, and Mirielle and also her 2 great-grandchildren Jennalyse and August.

The Bunton family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff at Maine Medical Center and Gosnell House for the care and love they showed Becky in the last week of her life.
